The picture shows the scene of The Flight into Egypt on one of the eight altar frontals in the Rosary Chapel of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. It shows a compositional development in which accents of naturalism sit alongside more elegant notes and rhythms with formal and narrative cadences that suggest the style of Antonio Molinari. Piazzetta and Molinari must have known each other, given that Piazzetta's son, Giambattista, had already started his apprenticeship with Molinari around 1695.
