PIETRO DI DOMENICO DA SIENA
(b. ca. 1457, Siena, d. ca. 1533, Siena)
Madonna and Child with Two Angels-
Tempera on panel, gold ground, 59 x 39 cm
Formerly, this painting was in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It was sold for the Acquisitions Fund in 2015.
Pietro di Domenico likely received his initial training in the shop of Benvenuto di Giovanni. The works of Francesco di Giorgio and Matteo di Giovanni, however, also very much inspired the young painter. As an early work, this Madonna and Child bears the hallmark of all three influencing artists.
