PIETRO DI GIOVANNI TEDESCO
(active 1386-1402 in Florence)

Madonna of the Roses

c. 1399
Marble
Orsanmichele, Florence

The inventive tabernacle of the Madonna of the Roses (Madonna della Rosa) in the Orsanmichele is the best known work by Pietro di Giovanni. Even conceding that the idea of covering a tabernacle with a stone canopy owes its origin to others, the statue itself has formal qualities that were extremely innovative in comparison with Florentine stereotypes.
