The Creation of Adam1334-37
Marble, 83 x 69 cm
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence
This is one of the hexagonal reliefs on the Campanile, which were probably based on Giotto's designs. The Creation of Adam, which begins the series, obviously comes straight from Giotto's quatrefoil representing the same subject in the decorative framework of the Arena Chapel in Padua. The figures and their poses are almost identical, although the increased size of the image permits the figure of God the Creator to be shown in its entirety, as well as allowing the addition of the splendid array of trees, including both the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life.
