PISSARRO, Camille
(b. 1830, St Thomas, Virgin Islands, d. 1903, Paris)

Place du Théâtre Français

1898
Oil on canvas, 66 x 82 cm
The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

Pissarro loved to paint the city from a high vantage point, blending the figures of people, fiacres, kiosks, and patches of light into a general motley of the street. The omnibuses on the spacious square, crossed by the relatively new Avenue de l'Opéra, are vivid signs of the new Paris yet already seem completely commonplace.
