POLLAIUOLO, Piero del
(b. 1441, Firenze, d. 1496, Roma)

Altarpiece with Three Saints

1467-68
Tempera on wood, 172 x 179 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

The altarpiece with the same subject today displayed in the Cardinal of Portugal's Chapel is a copy of this painting, of which it is thought that only the design was the result of the combined efforts of Piero and his brother Antonio, whereas the actual execution is to be ascribed entirely to Piero.

The traditional iconography, descended from Vasari, identifies the three characters as Saints James, Vincent and Eustace.

The painting is part of a single decorative programme for the Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal, Jacopo di Lusitania, grandson of the king of Portugal, who died in Florence at the age of twenty-five.
