A probable student of the first major Dutch marine painter, Hendrick Vroom, Jan Porcellis continued working in that field, active in the great seaports of Antwerp, London, and Amsterdam. All his skills are evident in the Single-Masted Damlooper and Rowboat on a Breezy Day. Flying the red, white, and blue Dutch flag, this vessel was designed for ready passage over dikes and dams.
