The assembly room of the states of Holland and West Friesland in the Binnenhof, The Hague was designed in 1652 by Pieter Post, an outstanding Dutch architect who occasionally also painted. The room was constructed in the Binnenhof between 1652 and 1655. The painted wooden ceiling of this chamber (now the Upper House) still survives.

The engraving was executed by Jan Caspar Philips (c. 1700-1775), a Dutch draftsman and engraver, after a design by Mattheus Terwesten and G. van der Giessen.
