A Husbandman with His Herd

Beside a thatched cottage, set between trees in a typically flat Dutch landscape, are a few cows and sheep. Beyond the livestock stands a farmer, gazing at a black and white cow which stands separated from its companions in the foreground. Standing against the landscape of green pasture and grey sky, the isolated cow on the left seems almost monumental. It captures the viewer's gaze, serving as the point of entry into the picture. Right in the background, on the low horizon, one can just make out the silhouette of a town with its church steeple.
