Aile de la Belle Cheminée, Château, Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne)

The Aile de la Belle Cheminée (Wing of the Beautiful Fireplace) is an addition to Fontainebleau, built in 1568. It is a cold, academic work, influenced by the buildings of Vignola which he must have seen on his visit to Bologna in 1563. The general lay-out with the double flight of steps is impressive, but the detail is dry and strangely in contrast with the picturesque rustication of his earlier experiments in architecture.
