Until the early twentieth century this painting was generally considered to be by Rembrandt. Since then many names, pupils and followers of Rembrandt, have been advanced as possible author of the canvas. It might be an early work by Aert de Gelder, when he was a pupil of Rembrandt, but it could have been painted by an unknown pupil or an artist working outside Rembrandt's workshop.
