Diana

1867
Oil on canvas, 196 x 130 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington

This painting is a study of a nude for which the model was Lise Tréhot, the artist's mistress. Although the study was transformed into Diana, the ancient goddess of the hunt, in order to produce a painting acceptable for the jury of the 1867 Salon, the painting was rejected.

The style of the painting shows the influence of Courbet.
