Portrait of Giovanni Mocenigo

-
Oil on canvas
Palazzo Ducale, Venice

Immediately below the ceiling of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio there runs a frieze with portraits of the first sixty-six doges, from Obelerio Antenoreo to Francesco Venier (1554-1556). Most of these portraits are imaginary; the commission was given to Tintoretto but they were mostly painted by his son Domenico. Each doge holds a scroll on which are illustrated the most important achievements of his reign.
