RUISDAEL, Jacob Isaackszon van
(b. ca. 1628, Haarlem, d. 1682, Amsterdam)

Oak Tree and Dense Shrubbery at the Edge of a Pond

1646-47
Oil on panel, 66 x 49 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

The present landscape is not a realistic portrayal of nature. The image that Ruisdael created hovers between idealized nature and untamed wilderness seen in dramatic light around the main motif of the battered oak. The painter's urge to dramatize natural scenery is clear.
