Louis XI and Isabelle de Croye, scene from Quentin Durward

1827
Lithograph, 42 x 39 cm
Musée national Eugène Delacroix, Paris

This large lithograph was inspired by Walter Scott's popular novel Quentin Durward, about a Scottish archer in the service of the French king Louis XI, who falls in love with Isabelle de Croye, a countess from Burgundy.

The rare proofs of this unpublished image all bear curious sketches in the lower margin.
