SANGALLO, Giuliano da
(b. 1445, Firenze, d. 1516, Firenze)

Ruins of the Ancient Roman Theater of Marcellus

Drawing, 460 x 378 mm
Biblioteca Apostolica, Vatican

Giuliano da Sangallo was perhaps the most imaginative Florentine architect of the later Quattrocento. His knowledge of Roman antiquity was derived from study of the original monuments, and because his drawings often document buildings that no longer exist, they provide important information for archeologists.
