SANSOVINO, Jacopo
(b. 1486, Firenze, d. 1570, Venezia)

St James

1511-18
Marble
Duomo, Florence

This statue was commissioned from Sansovino for the nave of the Florence Cathedral to continue the project for the twelve Apostle figures abandoned by Michelangelo, who carved only the unfinished St Matthew. The figure of St James refers to earlier Florentine statues such as Donatello's St Mark in the pose and relationship to the niche.
