TINTORETTO
(b. 1518, Venezia, d. 1594, Venezia)

The Assumption of the Virgin (detail)

1582-97
Oil on canvas
Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

Two old men, certainly portraits of Brothers of the Scuola, carefully watch what is happening between heaven and earth. Tintoretto portrayed them in the canvas to remember the extraordinary association, which had lasted over twenty years, between the artist and the governors of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.
