Tischbein is the best-known of a family of German 18th-century painters. He was most important for his engravings of classical antiquities, but is now remembered solely for his famous portrait of Goethe. Tischbein was Goethe's friend and he is usually called 'Goethe Tischbein'. 19th-century composers - among others Franz Schubert - composed many songs based on Goethe's poems.
