All the leading members of the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità, which commissioned the painting, were portrayed by Titian among the spectators. The scuole were unions of Venetian citizens whose original purpose was to make sure that its members had appropriate funeral ceremonies. During the course of the years, the six wealthiest ones, of which the Scuola della Carità was one, became important charitable institutions that also played a leading political role in the life of the city.
