Study for St Peterc. 1516
Charcoal on faded blue paper, 157 x 134 mm
British Museum, London
This is the earliest surviving drawing by Titian that can definitely be connected with any of his paintings. It is a study for the head of St Peter in the Assumption, the figure seated on the Virgin's sarcophagus in the central foreground of the painting.
