Young Routy in Céleyran

Oil on canvas, 61 x 49 cm
Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi

Routry, about the same age as Lautrec, was employed as a farm worker on the Céleyran estate. This introverted, rather mistrustful looking young man was Lautrec's favoured model at the time, and he portrayed him in three paintings and seven sketches.

From the early 1880s on Toulouse-Lautrec's art had the brightness and the brief, easy brushwork of Impressionism.
