Frescoes in the Prato Cathedral
by Paolo UCCELLO

Sometime around 1435 Paolo Uccello began to work on the stories from the life of the Virgin and St Stephen in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption in Prato Cathedral. He painted the scenes of the Disputation of St Stephen, the Birth of the Virgin and her Presentation in the Temple, as well as the upper section of the Stoning of St Stephen, which was completed by Andrea di Giusto together with the other scenes on the lower level (the Finding of St Stephen's Body and the Marriage of the Virgin). Paolo Uccello is also considered the author of the four Saints on the entrance arch, and the fifteen roundels with heads in the frieze surrounding the frescoes. The four Virtues on the ceiling of the chapel, sometimes attributed to Uccello, are most probably not his work.
