This painting is a copy of Sebastiano del Piombo's mural painting in San Pietro in Montorio, Rome. It is one of the several replicas Venusti produced of this popular painting. This copy faithfully follows Sebastiano's mural, it is probably directly based on it. Venusti omitted only the two columns at the very front, thus directing stronger attention to the figural group.
