Jan Vermeer van Haarlem the Elder (or Jan Vermeer van Haarlem II), a painter of landscapes who was born and lived in Haarlem and who was strongly influenced by Ruisdael. From Ruisdael he derived above all his use of the high viewpoint and the panoramic view. However, the most interesting aspect of this panoramic view is the pair of figures, one of whom could be the artist himself. The two men stand with their backs to the viewer and are sketching en plein air.
