VERNET, Claude-Joseph
(b. 1714, Avignon, d. 1789, Paris)

The Town and Harbour of Toulon

1756
Oil on canvas, 165 x 263 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

In 1753, Claude-Joseph Vernet was commissioned to paint a series of canvases depicting the ports of France. The idea was a good one, for it exploited talent in a relatively unfamiliar genre and at the same time constituted a geographic census of seaside towns, not unrelated to France's naval ambitions.
