Mazeppa and the Wolves

1826
Oil on canvas, 97 x 136 cm
Musée des Beaux-Arts, Avignon

Horace Vernet remained close to British animal portraitists in the minuteness of his painting technique. This was used even in his most passionate animal subjects, such as his depiction of Mazeppa and the Wolves, based on the treatment of the theme by Byron.
