The monumental tomb of St Sebald, an important local saint in Nuremberg, was cast in bronze by the leading founder in Nuremberg, Peter Vischer the Elder. The work was frequently interrupted on the project before its completion in 1519. The florid crown of the shrine, culminating in three heavy Gothic pinnacles resting on eight slender supports, rises high above the raised box-tomb within. This huge bronze shrine is quite exuberant in its decoration.
