Portrait of Friedrich IV, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg
1815
Oil on canvas, 126 x 93 cm
Private collection
The sitter has been identified as Friedrich IV von Sachsen-Gotha. Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein executed the portrait in Rome (St. Peter's Basilica appears through the window) in honour of the Duke's conversion to Catholicism. The portrait represents a perfect blending of Neoclassical refinement and Biedermeier attention to detail.
