WOUWERMAN, Philips
(b. 1619, Haarlem, d. 1668, Haarlem)

The Watering Place

1655-60
Oil on canvas, 29 x 37 cm
Private collection

Philips Wouwerman was the most accomplished and successful Dutch painter of horses of his time. This composition reflects the artist's mature style, with its naturalistic rendering of the animals, its saturated bright palette with a silvery tonality and the radiance of warm sunlight highlighting the landscape, figures and horses.
