The Recapture of Coevorden, 30 December 1672

In 1672, France, England, and the bishoprics of Munster and Cologne all declared was on the Republic of the United Netherlands. The country was invaded from various fronts. In July, Coevorden, a small fortified town in the province of Drenthe, was occupied by the bishop of Munster. Inn December the town was retaken by the Dutch troops under General Carel von Rabenhaupt. The present painting was painted some years after the actual event.
