ZANDOMENEGHI, Federico
(b. 1841, Venezia, d. 1917, Paris)

Honeymoon (Fishing on the Seine)

1877
Oil on canvas, 15 x 25 cm
Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Florence

This painting was sent to Florence from Paris, where Zandomeneghi had been living since 1874 and where he had befriended Impressionist artists including Degas, Renoir, and Manet, as well as the writer Émile Zola. Shown in Turin in 1878, the painting caused a sensation because of its cropped composition and the use of colours, which were considered strident and unreal. The woman's husband is just barely recognizable behind the slope by the top hat, while his wife presumably musing about their future life together.
