ZANDOMENEGHI, Federico
(b. 1841, Venezia, d. 1917, Paris)

In Bed

1878
Oil on canvas, 61 x 74 cm
Galleria dell'Arte Moderna, Palazzo Pitti, Florence

Zandomeneghi's paintings often revealed intimate qualities combined with intense luminosity. Among his favourite themes were those of the feminine world, mostly young women caught in private moments of their daily life. Here, the sinuous movements of the girl's body lying in bed echo the floral silk wall covering, inspired by Japanese models. The seemingly casual and realistic approach to this scene makes the viewer somewhat of an intruder into a private world.
