Holy Knight St Florian

1638-39
Wood, height 286 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

The monumental Holy Knights carved by Martin Zürn for the high altar of the parish church at Wasserburg am Inn are entirely in the mainstream tradition of German Gothic. These figures were removed from the church in the nineteenth century and were lost until the mid-1950s. The figures were produced as a result of an oath by the citizens of Wasserburg in the plague year 1634 to renovate the parish church from top to bottom and install new altars. The job was awarded to the Swabian immigrant brothers Martin and Michael Zürn.
