Crucifixion

741-52
Fresco
Santa Maria Antiqua, Rome

This Crucifixion scene from the chapel of Sts Cyriacus and Julitta in Santa Maria Antiqua forms the centrepiece of a large private endowment made by the dean of the church, Theodotus. The art historical value of the scene lies in its combination of eastern pictorial elements, such as the 'colobium' worn by Christ - an item otherwise known only from Syrian manuscripts - and the Latin characters which identify the Saviour.
