MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, German
(active 1230-1240 in Bamberg)

The Virgin Mary

1230-35
Stone
Cathedral, Bamberg

This figure is from a Visitation group now set in choir aisle. The group was designed by masons well aquainted with the work at Reims. It shows a feature - introduced in Bamberg - which survives with persistence throughout German sculpture: a tendency for highly pitched emotion and a desire to involve and excite the feelings of the spectator.
