Talisman
A talisman is an object or an image producing apparently magical or miraculous effects.
With the significant increase in translations from Arabic in the twelfth century, the Christian West discovered a vast amount of new material related to a broad range of knowledge. One of the new genres of learned magic introduced to the West is that of "Image Magic" (Latin "imago magica"), a translation of the Arabic word ṭilasm (i.e., Talisman).
The Arabic word has a wider set of connotations than the English word "Talisman"; the magic images could be in three dimensions, as in figurines, and in two dimensions, as in simple painted figures, such as those found in Alfonso's manuscripts.
