Surviving metalwork from the Romanesque period is mainly religious including elaborate altar vessels, altar frontals, jeweled book covers, candelabra, and bronze doors - as well as shrines and reliquaries to house the remains of the saints, most notably on the pilgrimage routes.
The arm reliquary of St Lawrence is an early example of a "talking" reliquary, whose external form makes it clear which part of a saint's body is contained within.
