UNKNOWN GOLDSMITH, Italian

Enamel casket

1400-10
Silver and gilt, 34 x 30 x 18 cm
Cathedral Treasury, Regensburg

This house-shaped ornamental casket is finished with a rich enamel overlay inside and outside. Besides the enamel paintings of animals done with a brush, there are hundreds of gold stars and crescent shapes. These were applied to the enamelling prior to fusing to create the impression of a star-studded night sky.

The casket was probably made in Venice or in the Franco-Flemish area.
