The corpus of this triptych, representing the Man of Sorrows, is a sculptured group in gold covered with white enamel. The two side wings are colourful enamels with Mary and an angel carrying the cross on the left, John the Evangelist with an angel holding the lance on the right. The reverse sides of the wings depict St John the Baptist and St Catherine incised and covered with a transparent enamel glaze. Above the centrepiece is a diminutive sculptured group in gold with the Coronation of Mary.
This tiny triptych displays the virtuosity of goldsmiths and enamelists in creating small reliquaries and other religious objects.
