The first half of the sixteenth century was marked by a vogue for 'enseignes', ornaments for male headgear analogous to similar pieces worn in the Middle Ages. These pieces bore compositions influenced by ancient models and themes. This composition, swarming with soldiers equipped with ancient battle gear and ridding white horses, is a nocturne. It may have been intended to evoke the battle of Marignano, which took place at night.
