Antique Sardonyx Vase with Lid and Mount in Gilt Silver

16th century
Stone, gilt silver, height 45 cm
Museo degli Argenti, Palazzo Pitti, Florence

This is an example of the ingenious adaptation of antique stone carvings to the taste of the Florentine Renaissance. The stone is the Augustean period, gilt silver mount from the 16th and 19th centuries. Lorenzo the Magnificent's name is incised in large capital letters on the stone, and his coat-of-arms is found on the metal base.
