Tumbler

1609-29
Silvergilt, engraved decoration, height 8,3 cm
Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest

This simple-shaped tumbler owes its rarity to its decoration. It is embellished by three emblems in cartouches with pertinent Latin mottos and explanatory verses in German. Arranged in logical sequence, the so-far unparalleled emblems extol farm work and allude to its theological dimension.

The present tumbler was produced by Hans Reiff (1580-1633), a silversmith in Nuremberg, who worked for a noble clientele. It is part of a set decorated with emblems.
