Rectangular Snuff-box

1762
Gold enamel, 3,7 x 7,8 x 5,8 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This rectangular snuff-box with enamelled medallions featuring scenes in the manner of David Teniers is attributed to Louis-Philippe Demay. The taste for picturesque scenes in the Flemish manner lasted throughout the entire eighteenth century. We find these scenes transposed - usually via a print - to tapestry as well as porcelain or, as here, to enamel inserts on articles of goldwork.
