Holy Water Font

1700-10
Hard stones and gilt bronze, 78 x 46 cm
Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Florence

This holy water font, created in the grand ducal workshops in Florence, was meant for the wall of a bedroom, therefore for the private devotion and daily prayers of a member of the Medici family. It took on the sumptuous, theatrical forms typical of the Baroque style in the seventeenth century. Variously coloured stones form the two relief busts, representing the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Annunciate.
