Lorenzo de' Medici and His Artists in the Sculpture Garden

1571
Wall tapestry, warp and weft, wool, 425 x 455 cm
Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Pisa

This tapestry is part of a series of seven, consigned to the Guardroba of the Medici in 1571, for hanging in the hall of Lorenzo the magnificent in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. They were woven from cartoons prepared by the painter Johannes Stradanus (Giovanni Stradano) in the Florentine workshop of Benedetto di Michele Squilli (active 1555-1588). Benedetto headed two workshops which were under the artistic directorship of Vasari, who had been entrusted with redecorating of the Palazzo Vecchio by Cosimo I in 1555.
