In the 1770s, Adam worked mainly on building projects in London. In a number of town houses he was able to demonstrate his skills in extremely confined spaces. A well-preserved example is Number 20, Portman Square, erected in 1773-76 for the Countess of Home. The centre of the house is the Music Room on the upper floor with its windows and doors set in niches. It is delicately designed, with very narrow, flat pilasters with mirrors between them, and circular medallions on walls and ceiling.
