The allegorical female nude statuette personifying Ops (1572-73), which Ammanati contributed to the studiolo of Francesco de'Medici, epitomize his mature style, which, while distantly derived from Michelangelo, Bandinelli and Sansovino, concentrated on grace of form and movement at the expense of emotion in a way that was typical of Mannerism. Ops, more properly Opis, (Latin: "plenty") is a fertility deity and earth-goddess in Roman mythology of Sabine origin. Her husband is Saturn, the bountiful monarch of the Golden Age. | |
