(b. 1360/70, Siena, d. 1428, Siena)

Crucifixion

after 1400
Tempera on wood, 50 x 84 cm
Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio

This painting was once a small part of a large altarpiece created by the Bartolo family workshop in Siena. It would have been the centre panel of the predella, probably flanked by three panels on either side telling the story of the Passion — the events leading up to the resurrection of Christ.
