Jacques Androuet du Cerceau's first Livre d'Architecture was published in 1559. This book is concerned with the design of town houses, a problem which had rarely been treated before this time. The book presents plans for houses of all sizes, from one suitable to a merchant, to the grandest hôtel of a noble family.
